Not trying to brag, but somehow I've managed a big law offer as a 2L transfer without getting on journal. I am wondering if there will be any adverse impact by not trying out for moot court, or really getting involved in anything at all on campus.

Any thoughts?

I know of 4 people in my class specifically without journal or moot court and with big law offers.

This is a question for career services.

Regardless, students generally apply for membership on journals and/or moot court for the purpose of obtaining a legal position. If you were given an offer by a firm, this means that the firm already knew you were not on a journal (or at least there was a chance you would not be on one since you are a transfer that needed to apply for it) and that you did not have moot court. In other words, all of that is moot (no pun intended) since you have an offer now. I am guessing that the firm hired you based primarily on your grades, and if you were a transfer student, they are probably somewhat exceptional.

When I was doing 2L OCI in 2008, I also had multiple big law offer, without MC/journal. Was no offered at the end of 2009. Clerked for a state trial judge for a year and received 2 more big law offers in 2011 after my clerkship. I'm currently a midlevel at a v50 firm in a secondary market. Graduated top 35% from top 30 school.

Having MC/Journal will definitely help, but if you don't have it, don't give up.

No need to join a journal especially if you want corporate and have ok grades. In fact, a few corporate partners told me during CBs they don't give a shit about journals...

I can't believe anyone who did journal would value the experience.

No journal/MC here...and bottom 25% of the class. Still managed to snag a V50 gig for next summer.

This is the correct way to do 2L. Also doing neither and planning to work to pay off these awful loans

I'm in the same boat, man. Part of me kinda regrets not doing the writing comp because I think I maybe could have got a better offer. But whatever, 2L should be chill as fuck now.

Me too, V50.....although I had made a secondary journal at the school I transferred from and had that on my resume.

No journal previously, none after. No MC.

V5 firm.

Everyone tells me it's not going to be a problem - I hope not.

4bl offers (Chicago and NYC- 2 v50, v70, and v5 ) and 3 mid law. Below median ( by .04) at t25 with no journal or moot court.

2 years work experience which may be why but still pretty happy. Can't complain.

Have some friends at T1/T2s slightly below median, but landed biglaw jobs in IP a few years back. One in DC and the other in SF.
They had EE backgrounds though and don't regret it for a second.
They're enjoying their work and 160k was almost triple of what they made in engineering.
Pretty sure they're at the 200k range now.

I don't see why this should matter. There's no reason at all to join moot court unless you're actually interested in doing it. Somewhat similar with law review, though it's obviously much more prestigious of a resume line -- though perhaps even a bigger waste of time than moot court.

I was a 2L transfer with no journal. I did MC but not until spring semester, well after I had accepted a 2L SA BigLaw offer, and I did not need to submit a new resume to be considered for full-time offer after SA. You'll probably be fine. Just don't get no offered.

Do the whole networking thing. Reach out to alums of your school (undergrad and law school) that are working in your target market(s). Establish some rapport. This is a great thing to bring up in your interviews: "Well, I met with so and so and discussed the firm. She said x and z and that really appeals to me. etc. etc."

Be a good interviewer. Thankfully, this is something that comes naturally to me (unlike law school exams, apparently). If you aren't good, practice practice practice. Do mock interviews. Go to networking events and practice talking to practicing attorneys just to get used to it. This step is absolutely essential. No firm is going to callback/offer a candidate with shit grades who also has a shit personality. You need to show that you are a great fit and that you are someone who will be able to communicate with clients without being a liability.

Oh, and most importantly, go to a t14. Bottom 25% at a non-14 means zero chance at biglaw. Obvi.

Almost no one asked me about it during our OCI. Pretty sure the hype is a scam to lock students in to the slave labor commitments.
