Recent grad, had a CB for a staff attorney position in a specific niche practice group in a DC biglaw firm last week. When I say staff attorney its not like a doc review person, its just a non partner track position that pays a bit less but does actual substantive work. The person who used to have the position left, and from what they said they are looking to fill the position quickly.

Interview was exactly a week ago. When should I expect an answer? I'm a bit thrown off because I'm used to the whole OCI process where people got same day and next day offers (obviously I was not one of those people)

Would it be reasonable to expect news any day, or do they usually take a few weeks or more for this type of thing is really what I'm asking

Did you work any jobs during law school that may generate conflicts? Sometimes law students can create potential conflicts without realizing it (example: student worked a clinic at school and repped individual homeowners in a foreclosure against a large financial institution, student now applies to biglaw firm that takes business from said financial institution).

Conflicts can take a long time to clear, and if the firm has to get a client waiver then the timeline isn't even up to the firm (because the client can be the one dragging their feet).

I definitely did work in the same area during law school, but in this specific practice area all dispute are generally with the government, and not other private parties. Not sure if that prevents any conflicts tho.

Because OCI is an artificial environment where almost all the eligible applicants will be matched with almost all the available positions in the matter of months. You either move on a candidate quickly or they go elsewhere.

Normal hiring fits in around workflow and can be drawn out for as long as it takes. There are a variety of reasons it can take awhile, from lack of focus delaying decision to not sending out rejection letters until an offer has been accepted. If you haven't already been a pest, you can follow up with HR to express continuing interest and to check in on where they are in the process.

Any thoughts on when I should follow up? Its been about 10 days, and I already emailed them once a few days after the interview to update my application because I just passed a licensing exam relevant to the practice area. The opening is still on the firm's career opportunities page.
