As unlikely as it may be, I'd like a trademark position at the USPTO. Anyone been through the process, or can shed some light on what I can do as a 1L to get an internship there next Summer?

Be aware that private companies not associated with the USPTO often use trademark application and registration information from the USPTO's . As I Think!!

(1) Attend school in DC
(2) Be a law student at a time that they happen to be interested in having interns
(3) Apply
(4) Get randomly selected
(5) Be willing to work for free
In my experience, getting hired at the PTO is more about your timing than your qualifications, although I'd imagine that taking trademark law wouldn't hurt. Also, beyond an internship, the PTO hires very few trademark examiners, it's boring repetitive work, and you'll get paid much less than the patent examiners (who don't have law degrees).

I applied to the USPTO as a trademark attorney last year and had trouble finding accurate information about the job or the hiring process. Much of the information I found wasn't accurate, and the same thing is true on this thread. To address a few, you don't need to go to law school in DC, and the office hires trademark attorneys every year.
Please feel free to send me a message on here with specific questions and I will answer them the best I can.
Good luck.

I mentioned going to school in DC because he asked about interning. Can get WE during the school year if you happen to be nearby. And as I recall, there was a long hiring freeze on trademark examiners after 2009.
