My boyfriend and I have offers at the same big law firm. We've been together for 8 months, so not just a fling. My question is what the general policy is at firms and how I should navigate this. I know a 3L whose firm had a "we discourage (not ban) relationships" within the office.

Any advice on this would be much appreciated.

I have 2 friends working at a V5 who have been dating for 2+ years (met in law school). They keep things professional and definitely don't act like they're dating when they go to firm events because they'd rather not risk breaking a vague firm relationship policy.

Why would anyone date a lawyer?

It's not a good idea but it happens all the damn time. Nobody really cares. But if you don't break up well, never ever do it.

Thank you for the information. Of course I would rather not (for a whole host of reasons), but our respective practice group preferences are perfect for the firm (yes, different practice groups).

My question is more about if this is something that should be disclosed and if so, what kind of reaction the firm might have. Do any firms (or CAN any firms) straight up outlaw in-office relationships? Or, like said above, more of an ambiguous "discourage" policy?

Why do you need to disclose it? Don't let it affect your work and be discreet about it. I'm sure you can both avoid PDA in the office.

Assuming you're just starting 2L, you could have three separate eight-month boyfriends between now and starting FT employment; I'd wait to worry about it if you're still together in two years.

It depends on the firm. I think you'll find out over the summer what the policy is. Some firms don't require disclosure, nor do they discourage relationships.

I avoided a firm where an ex of mine is a 2nd year associate. I would probably avoid it, especially since 8 months is not that long and you still would have to make it through 2 years of law school.
