Anyone have thoughts about this? I've heard the environment can be difficult but is that mainly Chicago?

According to ATL there's issues with bonuses/compensation. The office seems to be growing quickly though.

Growing insanely fast. Billables in corporate are through the roof right now so they need as much help as they can get. There is huge growth in M&A and Cap Markets and the Private Equity stuff is still at the same level that it was. Attorneys are disgruntled because they are working so hard; the firm is hiring to solve this by expending that practice area. There is a strong sense in the firm that, even though Chicago is the main office, business is being driven through New York right now.

Well, the hiring is also driven by the insane churn. K&E NY goes through associates like Leona Helmsley went through personal assistants.

Sense in the firm or sense in the NY office?

My impression from speaking with attys was that although there is competition between the offices, work is generally equivalent throughout the two.
