When to bring up splitting?

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Sep 02, 2014 2:02 am

Obviously you don't bring up splitting until you get an offer.

I have an offer from a firm that I really liked for various reasons, but their % offers made to 2Ls is not great. They also have a shorter summer program, and splitting with them and someone else seems to be the norm. I have a few offers elsewhere, but none I like as much as them, and they all run a standard 10 week program.

I would really like to accept with the first firm (offer rate something like 60%) and one other 100% firm, tbh just to hedge my bets. Who knows, maybe I end up reversing my opinion.

I am also CBing at a firm that just based on my screener and research I would also really like, but that isn't until next week, and the first firm's offer expires shortly after.

Could I accept at firm 1, and then tell them I would like to split when I know where the rest of my offers will end up? I do know I would like to split, but until the rest of the offers come in, I'm not sure who I would want to split with...

Or should I just pressure everyone to get back to me by the 1st firm's deadline, and tell both firms who I would like to split with? (Will they demand to know which firm I want to split when I ask to split?)

The trick will be getting one of the firms to accept the later start date, esp if these are in manor markets. Almost every firm "accepts" splits, but few will go the distance to make it feasible.

Yup. Similar situation to OP and I found that among firms that allowed splitting they all required first half; splitting didn't pan out. You need to be looking for a firm that allows second half splits, assuming you don't already have a second half offer

If they don't let you split, you really need to take the 100% firm. Try to get back to your preferred place down the road, not now with a 40% chance of being pretty much fucked career-wise

Would I need to find a 2nd firm to split with before accepting the first offer? Or would it be possible to accept, and then wait for the rest of the decisions to come in and then try to get one of them to also agree to split?

I would imagine if you already accepted they will be way less inclined to let you split. You have 28 days to accept, don't feel pressured to accept early just to show enthusiasm. If you haven't heard yet from other firms, wait before accepting.

My 28 day deadline is pretty close to running out. Also, they seem to encourage splitting. They asked me if I wanted to split during my interview (said I hadn't really considered it,) and they let you freely choose your start/end date, for a 6-8 week SA experience.

Oh interesting. Certainly not any situations I'm in or have heard about. Mostly my advice is worthless, but I will say if they truly encourage splitting, then accepting within deadline letting them know you will split if able seems fine.
