Winston's financials do not look promising (but either does the state of California's). Chicago is a great city though, although I don't know if it compares to a Cali coast city.

You can always do W&S Chicago, and then probably lateral back to California if you don't like it.

JCougar, that's a great point, thanks.

What's the attrition & partnership prospects like at the small firm?

W&S til you pay off loans (hopefully you last that long) then try to lateral to wherever you want to be

home market COL may be low but Chicago isn't that high (I think?)

105k vs 71k after taxes is pretty significant when paying off loans @ 7%+

As someone facing a similar dilemma, I would go with Winston & Strawn. You seem ambivalent and could use the extra money for a few years to pay down your loans. Easier to lateral to the mid-size than the other way around. Of course this decision is highly personalized (just my two cents).

If ca option is downey brand, beware.

I would just be worried as W&S has seen ~2% revenue drop for the past few years and there doesn't seem to be any indication that it will get better. If business is drying up, junior associates are the first ones to go.

Winston. Thank me when you have to study for the Illinois bar and not California's.

I recently interviewed with DB at OTIP. Besides the partner exodus, what's wrong with Downey Brand?

I am hoping to be in pretty much the same situation. Have an offer at a regional who pays 100k with low COL and have been doing NYC callbacks. I am 100% taking NYC if I get it seems like a no brainer. You only really get 1 shot at the big leagues

I think this is a very personal choice--follow your gut: are you happy in mid-law with less prestigious clients in a smaller (I'm speculating) city? For many, this would drive them toward W&S. (See above poster.) You should know, however, that the COL in Chicago is very low--I'm not sure what you consider "dirt cheap," but COL in Chicago is about 25% of that in NYC or 40% of that in LA. (Think spacious high-rise overlooking Lake Michigan for <$2000, or something more modest for much less.) Part of the reason for this is: Chicago is freezing in the winter, like legit miserable.

Have you ever lived in Chicago? Good luck finding your spacious high-rise for 2k.

Your question strikes me as similar to this one: So Mrs. Lincoln, other than that, how was the play?
Sacramento’s largest law firm had 122 attorneys last June. The website now lists 100.

Is there a city called Chicago in India? 25% of that in NYC?

You can absolutely find decent sized apartments in high-rises for around 2k in Chicago but lol at the 25% of NYC number.

Their revenue is dropping, and their associates are nervous (with staff layoffs already happening and rumor mills churning about junior cuts). Take with a grain of salt, of course, as I hate the fucking firm.

Edit: it's also worth mentioning that Dan Webb is getting really old. As he goes, so goes Jim Thompson. As they go, so goes the firm.

Fuck off Mal. Find me a few listings of apartments that are 1) spacious, 2) high-rise, 3) overlook Lake Michigan for <2k
