Is there a general etiquette that goes to cancelling a callback to a "safety firm" after receiving an offer from one of your top choices that you haven't accepted yet due to still needing to go on callbacks with your other top choices?

The reason why I ask is because the callback I would be cancelling is less than the 2 business days generally "required" for cancelling interviews. I know I could just go put on a smile and do the callback, but then I would be wasting their time, my time, and possibly taking an offer away form someone else.

(The interview would be in the city I live in, so no travel/hotel accommodations to consider)

Did this plenty of times. It's better for them if you cancel if you're no longer interested so you're not wasting their time.

Yeah. If you're not interested, just let them know that you're pursuing other opportunities. Firms are in an awkward position at this time, as well.

I've done it a couple of times this cycle. Just send a professional, short email expressing your gratitude for being given the opportunity to interview, but state that you respectfully wish to be withdrawn from consideration for their summer program. Boom. Done.

Some might ask if you have accepted the offer of another firm. Totally up to you in how you answer, but I don't think there's any harm in just telling them yes. What are they going to do, ding you after you cancelled on them?

Why? Email is fine. The only time a call is arguably better is if you're canceling on really short notice (i.e. the night before an AM callback, the morning of a PM callback).
