Is it appropriate to call a recruiter to ask about when you should expect to hear about a decision? When I met with them, they were adamant about not hesitating to call with any questions, and I forgot to ask in person.

OP: I think you can go ahead and do that if you feel so inclined, but it does make you come off as giddy and anxious. Why not just wait and see what happens? Keep on mass mailing and hustling in the meantime

I just did this and the recruiter I spoke with seemed quite pleased to hear from me. I don't see any issue with this at all.

They know we're all anxious so I don't think it's a problem.

A recruiter is always going to seem quite pleased to hear from you, that's their job. They're also quite busy this time of year, so calling with unnecessary questions isn't the greatest idea. Probably won't hurt you, but you don't want to get a reputation as high maintenance. If it's only been a couple of days since you interviewed, and assuming you don't have other offers that expire soon, you run some risk of getting that reputation by calling. If it's been over a week, or if you do have offers that expire soon, then you have more of an excuse - but even then, it's better to email than to call so they can address your question when their schedule permits.
