Hey everyone,

Have you any recommendations on getting hired in companies like the above? I'm interested in Intellectual Property and would like to start as a legal assistant somewhere until I get my bar results. Also, shoot out any ideas as far as places you think would be fun and exciting places to work at.

I applied at Google earlier this year but only got a response that they've received my application and will review it maybe, or maybe not. It seems like a lot of these places let you submit an application and leave you hanging for a while. Any ideas on how to get these companies to call back?

Other places of interest would be record companies or book publishing companies.

from my limited 2l knowledge, isn't it almost a requisite to work in a big firm and then trying to go in house after 2-3 years? i spoke w/ someone at one of your above mentioned corps and that's what they said was standard now.

I actually worked a bit in recruiting in one of these companies prior to going to law, so I can share some insights. Almost invariably, working in BigLaw for a couple of years is necessary before recruiters will even consider your resume. If you don't have that experience, they will pass you over for the BigLaw associate that has the training and is looking to make the leap.

Also, applying for legal assistant jobs with a JD at one of these places is likely a waste of time. Recruiters will take one look at the JD and throw the resume into the "overqualified" trash pile.

Lastly, remember that some of these job postings at some of these companies get dozens of resumes daily (one legal job posting I worked on got over a hundred applications a day.) Don't expect the recruiters to call you back unless they're interested.

Thanks for the perspectives on these assistant positions. This let's me know what I'm up against and helps me gauge my expectations.

Any particular practice area did your company look for in particular? As a junior biglaw associate doing a lot of emerging company work (including related M&A and cap markets stuff), would that be the start of a good resume, if I can get another couple years (or more) of experience doing that kind of work?

I believe it can be a bit different if the IP group is the patent group. I've been contacted by "cool employment" companies like in that list and I've only been working at a no-name boutique for less than 2 years. It's very common in the Bay Area.

That's probably a good start. At my company, we were looking at several different roles, from privacy specialists to commercial to ethics and compliance. General emerging company work, including M&A, would probably translate well.

Disclaimer: I mostly worked on recruiting for legal assistants, but the legal recruiters did share some insights regarding attorney hiring, e.g. BigLaw is a big boost for attorneys and no JD for legal assistant jobs.

That's true. My part of the recruiting team didn't touch the patent group. Seems like patents are hot right now, so the pathway into in-house may look different.
