How to answer "Why New York City"?
I come from a small, rural town in the South, but bid heavily on NYC in hopes of obtaining a SA position. How do/should I answer the question "Why New York City?" ... can't just say "need job"

Just talk about it being the place where the biggest, best, most sophisticated, most elite, etc. etc. legal work in the country is done. I also threw in a spiel about being a night owl and loving that there is always something open when it's super late in NYC.

"It's the greatest city in the world."
"Has the best lawyers and law firms."
"Center of the legal world."
"Exciting."
Blah blah blah. New Yorkers jerk off to shit like that.

"Part of law school is the process of tempering all of the cool expectations you have about your life as a potential lawyer. All they do is lower your ceiling. When you go to New York, it doesn't feel like you have to do that to yourself. There isn't a ceiling; and if there is, someone builds an office higher than it anyway."
worked for me.

Hey, as a New York I take offense to that remark. You think I have "time" to jerk off? Not with all the looking at restaurants I can't afford, doc review at whiteshoe law firms, and rent paying with vital organs that I do on a daily basis. No, I don't think so buddy.smallfirmassociate wrote: New Yorkers jerk off to shit like that.

"I feel like the money I'd spend on a mortgage anywhere else is probably best spent on exorbitant rent when you look at the long-term property value situation. As a committed liberal, I'm also very excited to contribute tax dollars to amazingly shitty roads and truly lackluster public services. Most importantly, there are a lot of things I've never done that can only be accomplished in the city: watching rats crawl around the garbage that seems to always be piled on the curb, having unknown liquids fall into my face/eyes from the apparently permanent scaffolding, constantly having to decide between walking a distance I'd never considered walkable or waiting 15 minutes for a cab to recognize my outstretched arm, and bumping into celebrities. The food is also quite good when I eat instead of paying my rent."

This is the one thing I'll give NYC. I was raised in a very quiet city and always went to sleep with the radio on because it was too quiet. The city sounds do help get me to sleep.hipcatdaddio wrote:just tell them that the sound of honking horns really relaxes you.

Begin rapping "Empire State of Mind." You'll get a CB on the spot if you hire an Alicia Keys impersonator as a back up singer.

Lawyers ask mostly turd questions and lots of people get them wrong so I'm not sure who comes out a winner in that case.encore1101 wrote:"Why NYC" is such a turd question.

When you ask turd questions, you should expect turd answers.Mal Reynolds wrote:Lawyers ask mostly turd questions and lots of people get them wrong so I'm not sure who comes out a winner in that case.encore1101 wrote:"Why NYC" is such a turd question.
On a brighter note, I actually have a policy of not BSing during interviews. Someone asked me why I moved to NYC from California, and I told them the truth -- I was seeing a girl that lived in NYC, but we broke up a few months after I had already started law school.
I don't recommend it. Just do the ol' shuck and jive for your slavemasters and don't dare tell them the emperor has no clothes.

Re: How to answer "Why New York City"?
When I OCI'd last year lying to get cbs was in vogue due to a certain interviewing guide that was stickied and revered. It totally fucked me. I almost struck out. Since then and part way through the interviewing process I converted to a not lying policy that has served me well. I may spin things on the edges but I do not bold faced BS. I have gotten like 5x the cbs that way.Mal Reynolds wrote:I'm sure that strategy hasn't worked out well for you.encore1101 wrote:When you ask turd questions, you should expect turd answers.Mal Reynolds wrote:Lawyers ask mostly turd questions and lots of people get them wrong so I'm not sure who comes out a winner in that case.encore1101 wrote:"Why NYC" is such a turd question.

To the point of the thread I normally talk about the quality of the work--because I'm into corp and that's believable. In a lot of ways it is better in NYC than anywhere else if you're into that.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
