Not Invited After Firm Visit

Background: At a lower T2, top 5% GPA, flagship journal, moot court. OCI is 100% preselect, and there's not a ton of firms that come (roughly 20-30).

I visited a regional firm in my school's market after exams this semester, and actually enjoyed the limited time I spent there. It was very informal. Talked to some people in recruiting about the process, went over my resume, and spoke to some junior associates.

We were recently given our preselects, and I received an interview from every firm I bid except the one firm I visited. I can't help but think that I must have said/did something to ding me. If that's the case, I obviously don't want to do that again.

Do you think it's kosher to send the recruiter an email saying (roughly), "Disappointed I didn't get an interview; really enjoyed my visit; if there's anything that I did 'wrong' that led to not receiving an interview, I'd appreciate that feedback, etc."?

Oh just read it more closely. Ask for an interview. Don't ask for feedback.

Don't ask for feedback, say you're still interested and would love an interview if there are any openings or something like that.

It's never "kosher" to send an e-mail that beta.

I agree on asking for an interview. BTW, you may not have been pre-selected because they feel like they've already screened you (i.e. your lack of a screener may not be a ding).

It sounds like you already got a CB and dinged, basically. Which isn't anything to panic over, so don't. They already CB'd you, why would they preselect you?

That said, I think trying to get feedback from recruiting is probably more helpful than harmful. Low risk, and while I doubt they'll tell you anything meaningful, if they do, it will really help.

Good luck.

Sounded to me like he/she went to a firm to meet a couple attorneys - more informational interview-style. e.g. go to lunch with a couple people, meet a few others to talk about day-to-day, etc. It didn't strike me as a CB-type thing.

That sounds like every CB I've done.

Agree that it sounds like a CB. Otherwise, it would be a massive waste of everyone's time.

That said, I would still follow up and ask for a job.

OP here. It's hard to call what I went on truly a CB. It was a grand total of about an hour. The recruiter showed me around the office, we talked about the OCI process, and I chatted with a first year associate about his OCI process. It was even pitched before I went as a "pre-OCI" get to know us.

That being said, it may have been a proxy CB, even if it was much more low key.

I still think it was a proxy screener, if anything.

Sound like they already interviewed u (either as a long screen or a semi-CB, thus not interviewing u again), just sit tight and wait for an offer, follow up every few weeks or so to continue expressing interest. Don't shoot urself in the foot by assuming they already dinged u (until u receive that snail mail).
