I am going to be a 3L and did not have a big law summer associate position. I am working this summer in the legal department of a Fortune 500 company focusing on a specific practice area. My grades improved significantly since 2L OCI, so I am hoping I have a shot at landing a position.

Is this what a mass-mailing email should look like for someone in my position? Is it appropriate to go through a list of firms and send this to the HR department? I edited out my personal information and the law firm's information for obvious reasons.

Also, any suggestions on what the subject of this email should be?

I am a third-year law student at the [LAW SCHOOL] and am writing inquire about the availability of an entry-level associate position with [LAW FIRM]. I am specifically interested in a [PRACTICE AREA] position, as I have spent this summer working on [PRACTICE AREA] as an intern at [FORTUNE 500 COMPANY]. I am especially interested in [LAW FIRM] because of its strength in [PRACTICE AREA] and [OTHER REASON ABC].

Is [LAW FIRM] planning to hire entry-level associates? If so, what is the timeline for the recruitment process? I have attached a current copy of my resume for your reference.

You'll either want to make the body of the email a cover letter or attach a cover letter. Yours fails at both: too long for a basic email, but far too short and unhelpful for a cover letter.

Also, just state that you are applying for a position. Don't ask if they are hiring.

And prepare for rejection/silence. 3L OCI was a joke for me and I had an SA. Can't imagine what it's like not having one. I'd recommend networking, alumni, etc. Far more likely to land something that way. That said, definitely try mass mailing. Just don't get your hopes up and don't wait around for firms to get back to you.
