K&L Gates: Email to Upload Application after Resume Collect?

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone could shed some light through previous experience or pure speculation. My school had a resume collect with K&L Gates, so naturally I applied. I have a family friend who is a partner in an office across the country, who had mentioned he was going to ask around if anyone know contacts in the office for which I was applying, but as far as I know he hasn't contacted anyone.
Today I got an email from K&L Gates thanking me for my application and asking me to upload all of my documents to their careers website. It was written almost as if I had mass-mailed (although I didn't). Specifically, it started with:
"Thank you for your interest in K&L Gates LLP. We're pleased that you're considering a position with us! Even if you have already mailed your materials to us, you are still required to submit your application online."
Strange thing is, the email was sent to a recruiting coordinator at the firm, and I was CC'd on the email. The online application asks for the exact same documents I submitted with the resume collect. So naturally I'm a bit confused as to (1) why they needed me to submit online, and (2) why the email was addressed to a coordinator and I was CC'd.
Is this standard procedure following their resume collects, a precursor to an interview, or just totally and utterly random? I'm wondering if perhaps my family friend spoke to someone in the office for which I applied, but I'm obviously not going to be blunt and ask.
Also, to make matters more confusing, I have an OCI interview with another one of their offices in 2 weeks, so they clearly have all of the materials they normally require.
Any input is much appreciated!

It sounds like one of two things. Either your family friend got in touch with recruiting and they are reaching out to you, or something screwed up with the resume drop and the materials did not upload.
Either way its a good sign, they wouldn't be going out of their way to ask you for shit unless they were at least marginally interested.

Former 1L SA there - for 1L they didn't do a resume drop, and I Submitted my stuff through the website and that's where they got all of it, so they clearly utilize it. I would err on the side of providing that info through website. It takes 2 seconds to fill out their app, and worst that can happen is they have your resume twice right?

Original Anon here - Thanks to both of you for your input. I already went ahead and uploaded to the website. I also spoke to some others folks at my school who are all similarly ranked and none have heard anything, so I'm hoping it's a positive sign. I'm thinking maybe it was emailed to the recruiting contact so that they are on the look out for my application once I upload? Grasping at straws here, but either way I'm cautiously optimistic.

Probably standard. Got a similar email from a different firm after applying through my school's OCI process.

The point is that he didn't mass-mail - it was a resume collect. And he has an OCI interview for another one of their offices, so they clearly have his materials. I would say that the most likely result is that your family friend got in touch with someone in recruiting. Big firms don't go out of their way to reach out unless they're interested, so I would take it as a positive sign.

Are you kidding me? I just said I got the same response when I mass mailed, as in, they have my materials too and asked me to apply online. It's not something special for him, just how they like their applications sent.

When you mass-mail, the recruiter has your materials sitting in their inbox...so they ask you to upload it in order to have it in an organized database. Had he mass-mailed and gotten this response, I would say it's nothing special. But the fact that he has an interview for another office set up and no one from his school who did the resume collect has heard a thing, that's something to take note of. And as far as the fact that it was sent to a recruiting coordinator and he was CC'd, that seems unconventional to me.

Anon who posted about my 1L sa there.
As some unsolicited advice OP (Since I'd love to see ya do well), not sure what office you're applying to but they love to see strong connections to the host city. Something about K&L gates that's good to know is that they've grown incredibly over the last 5-10 years through acquisitions of local law firms. Therefore, many if not all of the partners you interview with will likely be from the legacy firm. In that regard, it's a good question to ask about how the transition has been, how K&L differs from the legacy, etc. to show you did your research. Good luck!
