Desirability in IP lit market?

Looking for folks to evaluate my eligibility in the IP litigation market...
B.S. Biological Sciences undergrad (pretty poor grades...just being honest),
-I did receive a good bit of technical training in undergrad
Low tier 1 law school graduated mid-class
Currently practicing criminal litigation in a mid-sized market.
Would like to stay in said mid-sized market.

Just for reference, I did get an A in patent law in law school so I have a little bit of an idea of the law in the area of IP, not that this means ANYTHING in the hiring market, obviously.
I suppose I'm looking towards the possibility of joining a GP in my market for IP due to the relative lack of competition versus other civil practice areas. I have a feeling based on looking at CV's that I'm a little out-of-my-league and that more WE in my technical area would have been required to practice in IP. I'm getting great litigation experience where I am now although obviously that's criminal not civil. Just trying to gauge my overall suitability for transfer to a midsize IP department.
I'm debating taking the USPTO exam right now, wondering if its worth the trouble or if I even have a shot at moving into the IP practice area.
