Online applications - upload non-required items?

I'm applying online to some firms (via their online app, like the same one every firm uses apparently). Usually they will list resume, transcript, writing sample, cover letter, but only some of these will be starred with a symbol (required). Does this mean the firms do not want the non-starred ones at all? I just find it weird they would leave the option to upload it when it's not required. Note that it does not even say optional next to the non-starred ones.

I think what the person is saying is that they have specific menus to submit the other material, but its not "required." So they're "asking for it" but also not.

Hardly anybody wants useless shit like a writing sample or rando references. If a firm wants these things they'll make them required. Johann is correct here
