Email materials or use the online app?

My gut feeling is if there is an online application to fill out that's how a firm wants the materials submitted. But the hiring partner is also listed on the website for each office, does it really make much of a difference?
I guess worst case is they ask you to resubmit it through the system - but couldn't it also get you a chance at them looking it the materials rather than an HR person first?
Like Dechert for instance - you click on the link to apply but the Hiring partner's name/email for each office is listed below the link. Since i'm looking at more than one office for them it's multiple apps or emails so it's a wash, time wise.

Use the online app. After that, email the hiring manager to inform them of your submission, brief explanation of why you're interested (one sentence), and attach resume and cover letter. Repeat to multiple offices.

I don't get why fellow rising 2Ls are repeatedly giving advice about the SA application process. This may be TCR but it's really hard for a rising 2L to give advice about something were just starting to encounter. No disrespect intended Neb.

On firms where I missed that there was an online application, I received a notification from the recruiting coordinator that they only consider applications submitted through their online app. I've had quite a few firms say that I need to submit it online.

Same, I've also ignored the app and just submitted to the hiring contact and got a confirmation response. Can't say which is more effective, which I think is the point OP is getting at. I get the feeling that when I actually email the app, someone at least glances at my resume, whereas I feel like my application just gets lost in the pile when I apply online.

None taken, dude! I only posted that because: (1) I thought it was a pretty common sense answer, (2) of which the OP already knew the answer to, and (3) he was mostly looking for affirmation.
Also, when I feel like making half-way quality posts I will usually go to the unanswered posts section and try to help folks out who it appears no one else wants to answer questions for, if I know what the answer is or most likely could be. You can't help but learn the basic answers after reading numerous A+ quality A. Nony posts in the on-topics.
