If I said I was interested in a firm's x practice in cover letter then got a preselect, is it okay to shift my emphasis to another practice? Eg, cover letter said l&e but I want to say general lit bc I think I'm more interested in the latter and it is bigger at that firm

why would you do this?

I doubt anyone's really going to check whether what you say in your interview matches what you said in your cover letter, but I don't get why you'd do this either. Why would you say something different in the different contexts?

Well I don't want to completely abandon saying I want to do l&e, I just also want to say I want to do lit. I'm mainly thinking this bc the l&e practice group is 1/3 the size if the lit group

Then why did you say L&E to begin with?

I guess I'm just worried it will be too hard to get a CB if I only stay focused on L&E. I basically fucked up in my cover letter and didn't do enough research early on about the firm to know what I know now. It was my mistake. I do have an interest in L&E but not particularly strong to where I have past experience to back it up. My resume is more lit focused and I have better answers prepared for "why lit" as of now.

Oh, I get it. I mean, I think you can say "L&E *and* lit," or maybe "L&E as part of my general interest in lit." They're not contradictory, at least. It probably depends how hard-core you got about L&E in your cover letter - if the whole thing was why L&E is GREAT, it would be tougher to make that swing than if you had 1 line about being interested in their well-respected L&E group or the like.

Thanks! Yeah it was one line so I think I'll just say L&E and litigation.
