Following up mass mail application?

I started mass mailing, and a couple firms have gotten back with the generic "thanks, we have received your materials, we'll possibly be in touch, etc." Is it normal to follow up with these firms that have made such a response? If so, how long should I wait, and what should I even say? Thanks!

I don't think it is necessary to follow up with these firms. I think it is best to follow up with the firms that don't confirm receipt of your materials.

No, follow up with every firm that hasn't rejected you. I probably would not follow up with any firm until August (unless you have something significant to update them with or to tell them you will be in the area). After that up every 2-3 weeks with every firm that hasn't yet rejected you until you get an offer. Preferably, you should have something to update them with or should be telling them you will be in the area on X date, but you can also send a "still interested" e-mail if it's been a while since you've heard anything. You can also contact alums at the firm.
Make sure you're keeping track of the firms you've applied to, the firms that have rejected you, and the dates of any e-mails or other contact you have with a firm. It makes things much easier.
