currently at TT school, possibly transferring to a new york school. I have a 3.8 and made law review. should i be mass mailing, or waiting for OCI? I do not want to get caught behind. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Advice I have gotten is no earlier than mid July. I'll probably send mine around the last week of July (2 weeks before OCI), other than Quinn which should be sent now.

Probably to read tea leaves. Classic mistake.

Mid July is actually start of hiring season so I don't really get this

If you are an unemployed 3L then "hiring season" is pretty meaningless. You're probably only going to get a job if someone gets fired or quits, which could be any time, and mailing is more or less luck of the draw on timing.

If I find myself with no offer post-OCI I don't plan to stop mailing until they throw me in debtor's prison.

Body of email is cover letter. Attach résumé and transcript. PDF. No hard copies.
Should this be the standard cover letter that we use for OCI interviews that asks us to upload cover letters to the site?

Or something shorter?

OP, I would start getting your mass-mailing stuff together. I assume you'll hear back from NYU and CLS by mid-July. I would wait until then so you can update your resume with whatever school you're transferring to.

Mid to late July seems to be TCR, but I'm going to probably start in the second week of July FWIW. But that's mostly because I'm mass mailing a secondary market that I'll be available to interview in during summer but it would be harder to get back to in August. Might be different for a city like NY or DC

I think I'm sending out 2nd week of July for some major markets. But I'm also doing rolling mass mailing apps, so that will be my "top choice" of firms, and then slowly sending out more to other firms later on.

We really should create a TLS mail mergable db/spreadsheet.

Just copy and paste by hand.

Do you really want to make it extremely easy for all the lazy people to get email addresses and contact info for all the firms that you mass mail to? I know that sounds douchy, but putting the effort in to mail every firm gives you an advantage over other people - and more likely to convert that into a job.

Potentially stupid question, but related to topic of this thread.

Does the advice in this thread about starting mass mailing in mid-late July apply if you are applying to small to mid sized law firms in a secondary market, or only apply to large law firms?

The reason I ask is because when I was looking for law firm employment for my 2L summer, a number of small and mid sized law firms essentially told me that they won't even look at applications earlier than January of the year the applicant would start. Sorry for run-on sentence.

Well I think the right move would be to apply to all firms you are mass mailing at the same time and stick with the July-August timeline unless a firm says otherwise online or to you personally.

Does the advice of mass mailing in July apply to a rising 3L with likely offer but desiring to switch markets?
