Criticize my bid list

Post by Anonymous User » Sun Jun 22, 2014 2:20 pm

I'm H/S/Y with grades probably around the top 25% maybe a little less. I want DC but am going to throw in some chicago too. How does this look? I havent actually ranked them yet but want to know if I am on the right path. Also is it bad to bid the same firm in two cities?

Thirty DC
1. Akin Gump Stauss Hauer & Feld
2. Arnold & Porter
3. Beveridge & Diamond
4. Bingham & McCutchenen
5. Boies Schiller & Flexner
6. Cleary Gottlieb Steen and Hamilton
7. Crowell & Moring
8. DLA Piper
9. Fried Frank Harris Shriver and Jacobson
10. Gibson, Dunn
11. Goodwin Procter
12. hogan lovells
13. Hughes Hubbard & Reed
14. Jenner & Block
15. Jones Day
16. Kirkland & Ellis
17. Latham & Watkins
18. mayer brown llp
19. O’Melveny & Myers
20. Paul, Weiss
21. Rope & Gray
22. Sidley Austin
23. Skadden
24. Steptoe and Johnson
25. Sullivan & Cromwell
26. Venable
27. Vinson & Elkins
28. Wiley Rein
29. Williams & Connolly
30. Wilmer Hale

Five Chicago
1. Sidley Austin (Chicago)
2. Jenner and Block (Chicago)
3. Mayer Brown (Chicago)
4. Winston & Strawn
5. McDermott

Why the Chicago? Do you have ties? I'm just starting my own bid list, but they kind of just seem like a waste unless you either are a shoe-in or don't bid Chicago more heavily.

I was worried about just doing DC so I decided to throw in some Chicago is that a bad idea?

If you're in the bottom 25% you don't have any chance at Williams & Connolly and it's really not even worth the bid. I think the same can be said for S&C, Boies and probably Gibson as well? Some others can probably chime in on that.

OP edited it. It was ambiguous at first.

I doubt he's at Y if he's estimating class rank. I have absolutely no idea how you would even come close to an estimate with all of one semester of :) and :( grades

This is true.

35 bids from one of HYS kinda gives it away lol

I assume you mean that you are from HLS Can you be more specific about your grades? There's a lot of HLS alumni/2L/3Ls and we can, perhaps, be a bit more precise if you are.

I don't think you're as high in the class as you think you are. You're probably closer to top 40%.

There was a relevant discussion yesterday in the Quinn Emanuel thread about what is top third. Everyone seemed to think it was somewhere between 5 and 7H but the takeaway is that nobody really has any idea.

ph, any thoughts?

Try not to double dip firms in different locations--when I got one of my offers, they said the reason it was taking so long is that they wanted to make sure that I would get an offer at both before offering me one--seems like it might hurt your chances. You do this with Mayer and Sidley.

Also, Why did you pick those Chicago firms over the others?

Why DLA Piper?

Your grades will get you seriously considered by almost every firm on your list. I think your list for DC looks good.

Not sure if bidding Chicago firms is worth your while if you do not have ties and aren't serious about going there (interviewers often ask where else you bid). I also didn't listen to OCS and interviewed in 3 different cities. After the first city, I was exhausted during the rest of my interviews. Just my experience, but I'd focus on one city or maybe bid NY if you are worried about getting no offers in DC.

I think this is a bit optimistic. I would move Boies down and get rid of W&C at least. I'm not sure what S&C's grade cutoff is, but it might be worth it to bid them higher to make sure to get a screener, given the high ratio of callbacks to offers.

OP above all make sure the biggest 15 dc firms are on the list except maybe wc.

Let me restate my statements/questions. This is a list of firms I am interested in. Is this a good list of firms to now move forward and rank, or are there firms I should not rank at all/firms that I should add?

Make a bidlist first. A lot depends on where you rank it, etc. I wouldn't say take off S&C completely if, for example, you can safely fit it #30 or something.

This list looks good to me, although I might not be as confident about the super super super competitive firms. HLS doesn't tell us what our class ranks are so it is really a guessing game. (This actually annoys me sometimes because it makes it harder to know just how competitive you are.)

That said, I agree that you should replace Chicago with NYC unless you have a very good reason for preferring Chicago.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
