Any idea how many they're taking? I got a CB as well from a morning interview - assuming it'll be 1 or 2 summers max, but wanted to verify.

They referred to "the summer associate we just had" during my interview, which makes me think there was only one this year. I'd guess that you're right about 2 being the max. Let's hope for 2. Good luck!

Received Hogan Lovells CB earlier this week. Dings from Steptoe and Paul Hastings via e-mail.

Not to sound cocky, but do some firms ding people they feel like they can't get? I have CBs from GDC, Cov, etc but got dinged at lower firms. Not sure if I just blew the screener (didn't feel like it) or if there is some sort of yield protection going on.

Some firms won't want to waste money and time on a callback when you're going to go to another firm.

It's a real thing. Less so when you're in the same city and a callback is just you hopping on the metro and coming to their office for a few hours and maybe lunch. Definitely occurs between CB and offer though. They don't want to extend a bunch of offers to people who are just going to sit on them for 28 days and then decline. At the same time they don't want to extend too many offers and end up with a summer class much larger than they expected to get if the market is worse than expected and all those hotshots don't end up with "better" offers. I think it's why "so where else are you interviewing?" is one of the most frequent interview questions.

V50 alum interviewer here.

Yes, this happens. Much of what KidStuddi said is correct, but I think this applies more to post-screener dings than post-CB dings. It's not exactly yield protection, it's resource protection. Lawyers have very limited time to conduct interviews and HR is sensitive about using that time wisely. Every CB also costs the firm at least $1,000 in billable time. It would be a waste of time and money to do callbacks with students who are likely to accept offers elsewhere. If these firms did callbacks for every candidate they'd be happy to offer, they might not have time left to also do callbacks with the candidates who might actually accept.

Firms with smaller summer classes are also more careful about managing CBs to avoid getting burned. Firms looking for less than 10 summers can't have several outstanding offers for 4 weeks, because by the time those candidates refuse, there's nobody left on the market. So these firms are more selective about who they call back.

Never thought of it that way (losing billable time) but that makes a lot of sense. Thanks

Was anyone else under the assumption from previous years that we'd have heard from all the firms in a matter of days? It seems that most people I've talked to have heard nothing from a good portion of their screeners.
