How to gently push a firm into giving me a response

I've been given a deadline of this Friday to response to a job offer, but I'm still waiting to hear from another firm that I already interviewed with. Is it ever appropriate to let them know of a deadline that I need to hear from them by, or should I just ask for them to hurry?

My best friend was faced with this exact situation. Just call the firm and say that they are your first choice but you are facing a deadline. This way, no regrets. Not much more you can do.

I was in this position for 1L SA gigs. The firm should be reasonable about accomodating that request, but with two caveats: 1) You should ask them as nicely as possible and as in advance as possible (don't tell them on Friday you need an answer that day), 2) If you are on a waitlist, then pushing up the response may make them reject you outright.
