Canadian Grad hoping for US Big Law

Hi All -
A moment of your time would be deeply appreciated. I am a recent grad of a Canadian law school which places quite a few students in New York as summer associates.
I am wondering if anyone could provide me with some advice on ways to secure 'big law' positions in New York. I understand from reading the forums that law students in the US--who are in a similar position--tend to blanket these firms with applications and hope that one or two responds. However, I am curious about the timetable for making these apps: is there a time in the year firms accept apps for 1 year associate positions? Are there certain firms which are more receptive to these types of apps? Would there be a consulting agency worth contacting for help with this process?
I apologize if my questions seem pretty basic and I deeply appreciate anyone who can spare me a few minutes to write a response or pm me with one.
Thank you!
