Critique my Summer Strategy: East Coast T-14 -> L.A. BigLaw

School: M/V
Stats: top 1/3ish grades, no w/e, K-JD
Goal: L.A., but I ABSOLUTELY do not want to strike out (i.e. I will probably still bid NYC heavy at OCI)
Summer Stragegy:
I'm from SoCal, in L.A. for the summer interning for a judge.
Strategy:
1. Mass-Mail: early july for cali firms, late-july for everywhere else.
2. Attend 2-3 receptions
3. Try and do 5 informational interviews
4. Practice my interviewing with OCS, family, and hopefully my judge
What else could I add to this?
Thanks!
(Also, if anyone else with similar goals wanted to post their plan, this could maybe be a cool thread for that)

Did you TFA in LA? If so I can't imagine stronger ties.

There are many good LA firms that will pull top 1/3 from MV with ties. I think you'll be fine, but I like your caution and drive. I would encourage you to apply to OC offices as well just for breadth. Gibson, Orrick, O'Melveny, Irell, Latham, Paul Hastings, ect all have offices in irvine or newport; just check how IP heavy they are first.

Thanks for the advice, jbagelboy! To be clear, do you mean include OC into my mass mail, or actually bid on them at OGI - my school has a couple OC firms?

Bidding question: common sense tells me to apply to the least select NYC firms, but at the same time, those might not be the easiest ones for me to get, since many people will be bidding on them - would bidding predominantly on my firms in my gpa range actually be better, since it would cut out a little bit of the competition, or is that backwards?

Hey Guys.
I wanted to give this thread an update. I just accepted a V20 in SoCal, utilizing the basic strategy laid out above. The job came through a combination of networking, OCI, and luck. PM me if you would like specifics - I'm grateful for how much TLS has helped and would love to give back!
