CLS 2Ls,

AJF is here!

This is where you can discuss all things related to the job hunt. Bidding, number of screener interviews, success with mass mailing, etc. Use the anon feature if you want to discuss sensitive information (such as your own GPA range) without having anybody figure out who you are from your regular username. When AJF begins, you should use the anon feature to report any callbacks, offers and rejections you get so that other neurotic folks can know what to expect and freak out accordingly. And when you report a CB, please include the initials of the screener you had, as different screeners for the same firm may make decisions at different times. I will update the OP with a master list of CBs and rejections.

We're all in this together. Let's make this the best year ever for Cornell's employment numbers.

The fact that they release journal information after bidlists are due is such a crock of shit.

Grading takes a lot of time man- the journals try as hard as they can to get it out but it just takes a long time to grade 160+ comps.

Yeah, I can imagine and I don't hold it against the journals/members/anything like that; it's just frustrating in that the timelines conflict in such a major way, especially when it really impacts bidding options. Sorry if that came off a little angsty, I hadn't had my coffee yet

Top 10-15%. No real WE, not urm. These are all NYC firms. How can I fix this list?

Monday:

Gibson
Debevoise
Cleary
Latham
Fried Frank
Davis Polk
Cahill
Cravath

Tuesday:

White and Case
Paul Weiss
Jones Day
Sullivan Cromwell
Freshfields
Simpson
Shearman
Clifford Chance
Caldwalader
WilmerHale

Wednesday:

Two different thoughts on this day.

1:

Kirkland / Skadden
Kirkand / Skadden
Weill
Linklaters
Allen Overy

or 2:

Weil
Linklaters
Kirkland
Skadden
Allen Overy

Just a couple quick thoughts. You probably can get away with moving Gibson down. They are pretty selective from what I remember. The more selective the less people will want to bid. I'd move Latham way up and same with Cleary. They are the less grade intensive V10's so everyone's going to try and bid them for a shot at dat prestige. Day 3 you should probably bid Weil or Kirkland first. You can get Skadden later at 3 most likely. Day 2 I believe that JD is probably more popular than W&C, but if you like them more by all means keep them #1. Just some feedback I didn't have your grades so someone who did might be able to give better advice. Oh, also day 1 DPW is pretty popular from what I remember. I picked them up in open slots, but I'm sure ppl will be bidding them heavy. You can probably afford to move S&C down. They are like the most grade intensive firm out there, and few ppl will probably bid.

This is wildly wrong. Tremendously, wildly wrong.

I think you're confusing Cleary with Weil.

Most of the rest of the advice is ok. My year I heard of people getting Davis in slot 8 though. Selective + a ton of screener slots = easy to get.

OP anon here.

Thanks for the advice.

Are there more "Cornell friendly" v20+ firms that I should account for at all?

Anon - note my parenthetical suggestions:
Anonymous User wrote: Monday:
Gibson (no real reason for this to be first - I would put it third after Debevoise and Cleary)
Debevoise
Cleary
Latham
Fried Frank (doubt you will get FF this low so I would drop it)
Davis Polk (I would raise this 1 - so after Latham it would be DPW/Cahill/FF)
Cahill (I would switch this with FF because the extra slots mean a lot at this level)
Cravath (I would move this up a few, probably to third or so since they have so few slots and virtually everyone in the top 10% will bid them)

Tuesday:
White and Case
Paul Weiss
Jones Day
Sullivan Cromwell
Freshfields (you won't get this here unless they have way more slots than last year, so I would move it down to ensure you get STB)
Simpson
Shearman
Clifford Chance
Caldwalader (put this right after STB just because they have so many slots its your best shot at your 8th bid)
WilmerHale

Wednesday:

Two different thoughts on this day. (I prefer thought 1)

Kirkland / Skadden (I would put Skadden 1st but this is close enough that it should just be your preference)
Kirkand / Skadden
Weill
Linklaters
Allen Overy

Weil
Linklaters
Kirkland
Skadden
Allen Overy

Yes, the less selective V10s tend to be Weil, Kirkland and Latham. Also Latham tends not to be popular among people at Cornell for whatever reason - I got a screener bidding them 8th.

O okay sorry. Maybe I got confused because of Cleary's culture. I heard they tend to take more social people than say S&C. My V10 knowledge is admittingly not top notch.

Any historical advice on what percentile a 3.61 is? Top 30%ish? As a follow-up to that, I've noticed a some of the less selective V10s have callback averages in the 3.63-3.66 range, is this .02-.05 deficit a big deal or still worth bidding them highly?

The school awards the J.D. degree magna cum laude to students who rank in the top 10% of the graduating class. Students who rank in the top 30% of the class receive the J.D. degree cum laude . . ., [for the class of 2014] the gpa cut off for . . . cum laude was 3.6182.

Well it looks like I have my answer, thanks! Any thoughts on the few hundredths of a point below the firm's callback average being a major factor?

It's not a major factor. Averages are AVERAGES, meaning there are people below.

I met with CSO and they said that they do not list firms' gpa data unless they have been to AJF for at least two years. Could this be why?

No, because Cooley and O'Melveny have both been here the last three.

What's funny is there was data for O'Melveney when I was going through AJF.

Don't waste your bids on Skadden and Kirkland on Day 3- you won't get anything you listed after it that low, and you wont get either of those with top third grades.
