Networking best bet?

I've been practicing in an industry-specific field (think like oil law or gas law) where I do regulatory compliance work. I really like what I practice, but for personal reasons I had to move (significant other got a better offer at a great firm in a different city). There aren't many (read: any) firms here that do the type of work I've done in the past, and I really don't have any other experience which has made searching really hard. I've interviewed at a few places, but nothing has come through. I'm wondering if networking is really my best bet. I'm finding the job application process hard for me because I'm a few years out of law school but I don't have broad experience like litigation, trademark, M&A, corporate, etc. that could transfer over more easily. I'm open to start anew in a completely different area of law. Any advice to make this transition?

I assume you've already checked out in-house compliance work in the industry where you have expertise and come up with nothing in your new area.

One way to re-ignite a legal career is to get an advanced degree in a specialty area, like an LLM in tax.
