Because if nobody lied, the work environment would become depressing.Anonymous User wrote:To lie to summers about how not-that-bad it is here?!
But I could just say nothing instead of actively lying about stuff.rad lulz wrote:Bc your employer will be mad if you tell summers your job sucks?

I will say that some summers at the end of our summer said "I am really relieved to hear it's a true 9-6." Other associates hadn't, you know, blatantly lied to me, so I was really surprised that anyone thought that.brotherdarkness wrote:In what way(s) do you say it's not that bad? Anyways, it takes a naive summer associate to believe that biglaw is all sunshine and rainbows...
I think people will believe what they want to believe. If you talk to the one guy who has a slow month or whatever you tend to remember it more.Anonymous User wrote:I will say that some summers at the end of our summer said "I am really relieved to hear it's a true 9-6." The worst interview I had was for a Jones Day office. It wasn't just because Jones Day prides itself on the shitty black box employment scale that breeds resentment and paranoia among junior associates -- it was also the fact that there was this twerp of an associate present in the interview, and he was utterly incapable of not smiling and laughing at every single thing the partner said. He was basically a Stepford Wife.rad lulz wrote:Bc your employer will be mad if you tell summers your job sucks?
Your firms seems to brutalize it's summers in a very non typical way.brotherdarkness wrote:In what way(s) do you say it's not that bad? They don't tell you the dirty laundry. About the senior associate who was passed over for partner but is hanging on because he can't find anything decent. About the stealth layoffs. About the panic when your department is slow. About how your crushing debt stings you every time you have a negative interaction with a midlevel or partner. About how people will decide your work sucks and never use you on their matters despite saying "good work" just to get you to go away. Etc.brotherdarkness wrote:In what way(s) do you say it's not that bad? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_syndromeStockholm syndrome, or capture-bonding, is a psychological phenomenon in which hostages express empathy and sympathy and have positive feelings toward their captors, sometimes to the point of defending and identifying with them. These feelings are generally considered irrational in light of the danger or risk endured by the victims, who essentially mistake a lack of abuse from their captors for an act of kindness.
Helsinki syndrome is more of a case of group think and inattentional blindness to the negative in order to achieve some perceived benefit, a reference to the non-binding Helsinki Accords that attempted to settle post WWII Cold War tensions.
I'm reminded of a this scene:Anonymous User wrote:To lie to summers about how not-that-bad it is here?!

Victims of abuse commonly defend their abusers.Desert Fox wrote:It's really strange right? I don't get it either.
I really just cannot understand why anyone ever thinks posting something like this is a good idea.BigRob wrote:As someone who is about to start a big law gig, I can say with certainty that it will not be that bad. In fact, I wish it was harder -- so my wheaty goodness could rise all the more gloriously over my rabble-chaff peers.

The edit is an improvement, so I retract my humorlessness. My reaction was colored by previous comments about how biglaw can't be that bad.Nightrunner wrote:I'm about 99% certain he's being funny.A. PS I really miss the ability to know who was posting anonymously.
