Hello guys,

I am set to start work on my summer job Monday. However out of nowhere, I was contacted today by an organization that was my first choice. They have requested a phone interview about a job this summer. Should I go ahead with the interview? Or should I just keep the job I have and just move on?

So lets say I am offered the job, how would I go about leaving after starting Monday? Besides saying "Oh my dream job called, I have to go."

Depends on several factors. Will you get a permanent position out of the 'dream' job? Will you get one out of your current job? Are they in related areas, i.e., will you be trashing your reputation with people who matter? Etc.

As a general rule, if you leave a position on day 2 for a perceived upgrade, you are going to burn a bridge. It's up to you to decide whether the new opportunity is worth burning a bridge for. Reputation may also be a consideration if you're working in a tight-knit professional community.

Are you a 1L? For some reason this sounds like a 1L issue. If so, I'd just stick with the first position unless it somehow can turn into permanent employment.

I don't know if I would get a job permanently w/my "dream job" but the same applies to my current position. However, the dream job is located in the market where I want to be. Although, I did have someone put in a word for me with the current position and that's why I'm having a hard time deciding what to do.

I am a 1L that goes to law school in the South, but want to move to a bigger market such as the one where my job is located. Then again, I wouldn't mind staying at the current market if that is all I had available.

Unless there is a pay difference, the only goal of a 1L job is to not hurt yourself. Quitting the day before you start will likely do that. Odds are dream job wont have any positive effect on your post-grad situation.

I would do the interview either way, maybe you can talk them into a internship during the semester or begin to build some contacts.

Op here:

I just e-mailed them back saying I have a position and if they would take someone for second half of the summer I would be available. I think that would be the best strategy is to try to split the summer.
