I have a random question for the forum. Someone would like to buy me a nice work bag as a gift. Any currently practicing attorneys have advice about what to get/not to get?

My wife got me a Jack Spade Mason bag in black leather and it's very nice.

Thanks. Those bags do look very nice. Have you found them to be large enough and durable enough for your needs?

I actually also got a Jack Spade bag for my birthday last week: http://www.jackspade.com/wesson-leather ... &cgid=sale

It is very nice, great size (I could fit my laptop, padfolio, lunch in here with much room to spare) without looking bulky at all. Also on sale. Great texture.

Edit: I am only a 2L who got this bag in preparation of my 2L SA/ *hopeful* offer and full time employment. So not an actual practicing atty yet.

Thank. I'm guessing you wouldn't be able to say much about it's durability yet though.

Does it feel like it's good quality and strong?

Get a Filson 256 or 257. Tan or Navy.

Yes. It holds a legal pad, my work laptop (15" MB Pro) plus 3 or 4 files comfortably, without looking stretched out or ridiculous. Plus, the inside has a nice liner to keep the laptop safe from scratches and such, and interior pockets / pen holders. If you're routinely carrying massive files, it won't work, but if you need a basic bag that looks good in the office or in court or wherever, it's perfect.

silly question, suppose this is the place for it, would it be weird to carry my stuff (lunch, book, iphone charger, etc.) in a backpack during my SA in NYC or will partners think i'm some kind of prole if they see me with it?

I doubt they will care.

@OP: there are lots of different bags. As noted above, some people like the Filson 256 or 257. It's durable and clean-looking. Being made of canvas it holds up really well, is very resistant to the elements and is unlikely to get scratched up. Lots of people also swear by briefcases from Saddleback Leather. These are very high quality leather bags but their look definitely isn't for everyone. I tried to like them but I returned the one I got because the extra rings that are on the bag (which enable its conversion from briefcase to backpack) just looked to weird to me. A lot of people also swear by Copper River Bags as a cheaper alternative to Saddleback but in the same style (though they are likely less durable but that's a tradeoff you make in getting a cheaper price). There are also plenty of designer bags out there (e.g. Jack Spade as mentioned above) though these tend to be of lower durability than something like Saddleback or Filson (though they will often have more style-based looks if that appeals to you). And there's also a lot of independent guys out there (e.g. Sawyer Cabinet Co, though their website seems to be down so this is just a pic) which you can try out (often their are reviews of these independent guys on r/malefashionadvice or styleforum). Honestly just take a look around at a bunch of different bags out there. Even if its a designer brand that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad assuming you don't plan on beating it to shit, just make sure to look for reviews of quality before you buy.

This post made me realize it's time to man up with a fashionable leather satchel. With an internal pocket for my unmentionables.

I have the Filson 257, and its the only bag that I've ever owned that I liked (not that theres been to many).

It fits my laptop (which is not small), all my chargers, an external battery, pens, paper, highlighters, deodorant, a tooth brush, and a few books without bulging out. The compartments are really well thought out (Easy to see everything from the top and nothing ever has to be removed to get what I want. The zipper never gets stuck or torn, its great on the motorcycle, and its totally waterproof.

I'm not normally a fashion dude, but this once a huge purchase for me and, surprisingly, its not one that I regret.

I like the Coach 5266 personally, and tons of them in really nice shape are available used on ebay. But since it's a gift they may not want to go that way.

Don't you think an all black tux would provide better contrast?

Also, I wasn't able to justify the cost for this summer, but I really liked this bag (LinkRemoved) when I went to the mall the other day, and am thinking about picking it up for my 2L summer.
You better get an offer if you buy that bag, or does the offer come with it?
