Background:

1. t-30, pretty shitty grades -- had a solid first semester 1l year then took a massive nose dive 2nd semester but was able to pull them back up first semester 2 l year sitting at bottom 3rd now

2. obvisouly struck out at oci (i somehow managed 5 interviews and 1 callback but no offers)

3. landed a small firm paid in Texas where im from -- Purely corporate transaactional work (M&A, securities etc.)

My boss at the firm is a good friend and I interned doing clerical work for him in undergrad, He said there might be a possiblity of hiring me after the summer but he knows I want biglaw and has offered to help me as much as possible (setting me up with his contacts etc.)

Any advice on how to go about networking even more for a shot at biglaw 3l hiring -- i know it is a huge long shot but any advice would help

Thanks

Shitty grades means you will have almost zero chance to get biglaw through OCI. 3L OCI is generally a flame, anyway. I had solid grades (but not spectacular) and two full summers of SA work (both firms offered) and I still struck out during 3LOLCI. But you seem to know that.

So, obviously, the main way you can land something bigger is going to be through networking. If this guy is helpful, he can possibly get your stuff ahead of someone that matters on firms he has worked with in the past. Networking is a pain in the ass, but start emailing people at firms you have interested in who are alums of the school you're at. Don't go right for partners or anything but hit up younger associates to ask about the firm. Ask them some real questions, what they think, etc. You can then probably ask if they'd be up for meeting for coffee or lunch at some point after you build up a bit of a relationship with them.

If your boss can help you out there this may end up being even easier for you, but I wouldn't count on someone else's help for a job you want.

Honestly, your best bet would be to get a gig at his shop, I'd think. So the advice would just be make a killer impression on him because this will probably make him want to help more than he would otherwise.

How about me? Similar situation--T30, shitty grades, but working at PD/Legal Aid this summer, as I did last summer. Had school-year internships in public interest as well. Obviously not interested in 3L big law hiring, though.

What to do to prevent myself from being forever ensconced in the Vale? How to make an extra good impression this summer? I will be certified to appear in court.
