Top Law Schools

So, top 20% of a tier 3 school, no debt on a full ride from the GI Bill with no absolute need for employment after graduation due to my wife having a good job. I have an offer from one federal agency this summer (FTC) and am waiting to hear back from two others. Since I have Vet pref., there is a good chance all three will extend me an offer for summer employment. My only concern is that all three agencies are hiring under the new pathways program. Supposedly this means that they can extend me an offer for employment at the end of the internship, but I haven't had anyone confirm that this is what they actually do.

So when it comes to me choosing an internship should I go with the one that looks the best on the resume, or the one that I would want to do after graduation? I ask because I would prefer to stay where I am at due to my wife's job, but the more prestigious internship opportunities are in D.C. Anyone have any experience with something similar to this?

Take the one you want as a real job. Internships are the best way to get hired as a junior attorney. Some agencies only hire from their intern pool for entry level. Even if this isn't the only path, it always helps to have good references from the inside and a demonstrated commitment to that agency's mission. Non entry level positions will usually be looking at a pool that lumps people with 1-2 years with 10+.

Also, the "prestige" difference of internships is negligible, at best.

Is this for a 2L paid summer internship at the FTC Bureau of Competition? If so, you should definitely take it as the FTC has in the past hired the majority of its interns into full time jobs. If this is unpaid or if it is in the Bureau of Consumer Protection, they almost certainly will not hire you into a full time job.

BCP hires interns for full time jobs, but only a few from each class--whereas BC hires the majority. Since it's from BCP, you should just pick the place where you think the work will be the most interesting for your future goals.

Much appreciated. It's always hard to tell just how "good" these pathways programs are for leading to full time employment.
