Applying to jobs before bar results?

Many of the jobs I have been applying to say "Must be admitted to the bar in [State x] or must be admitted to the bar in in any state (in the case of federal jobs). I took the February bar and I won’t hear back about the results until May. Am I wasting my time applying to jobs now before I get the results?

Put on your resume "Awaiting results of X State Bar Exam" and apply. What else can you do?

Spend time with my wife or actually do work at work instead of applying for jobs.

I think his question was more hypothetical, as if to say, you can either apply or not. It's up to you.

Well I guess I was just making the point that applying to jobs is time consuming and takes away from other aspects of my life and I don't want to waste my time if my resume goes strait into the trash every time when they see that I am not admitted to a state bar.
I am just wondering if I had any chance at all or if an employer would consider interviewing me before I get the results.

Questions like these always get me. No one can tell you with 100% certainty that you can get an interview without having passed the bar. However, it is 100% certain you won't get an interview if you don't apply, so why wouldn't you apply?

Because if its hopeless then its just a waste of time. For instance, you would not apply to an attorney position if you never went to law school.
The choice is between applying now or just waiting and applying in May when i get my results and working on something else in the meantime (i.e. networking) instead of spending the time searching, writing cover letters, getting together writing samples, etc.

By the time the firm makes a decision, it could be well into May. Far more times than not, your resume will go right into the trash. Get used to it. And I'm not buying this whole takes away from other aspects of your life line. Time consuming, yes. But less time consuming than having a F/T jerb.

If you aren't going to put in the time to apply, might as well give up now. The worst that can happen is they say no, but you've got a 100% guaranteed no by not applying.
Stop being fucking lazy and start applying, which you should have been doing all year long.

Well I can tell it wasn't through a charm offensive.

No charm needed when you got skills like mine.

The same job that you apparently don't want?

Oh, by all means, wait until the last minute to apply then. Nevermind all the other people applying that are working on putting together solid applications and going ahead and getting them in for consideration. Judicial clerks, especially state trial court clerks, can easily walk into any job they want so why worry about it now? Why put yourself out at all, obviously you'll be the most impressive candidate so just chill for now.

I think you missed the point of my question. I AM applying. My question was asking whether my application would even be considered before I am admitted to the state bar.

When does your clerkship end? If it's the typical clerkship cycle (fall-fall), you won't be able to start till after you get bar results anyway. So it's not like you're looking at jobs that would require you to start before you can be admitted. I would just apply on the assumption that you will pass and meet that requirement by the time you'd start working.

That's not something that anyone except the person doing the hiring at that specific firm can tell you. My point is that the job market is extremely competitive and you'd be foolish not to be applying right now because you have nothing to lose and quite a bit to gain by doing so.

Yeah, that’s why I was hoping someone like a hiring manager would chime in with their thoughts.....as opposed to someone like you.

Dude, you need to chill and not be rude to people who are trying to answer your question. As great as TLS is, there are not a lot of hiring managers hanging out here. If you're looking for people to tell you it's okay not to send out job applications right now, you're not likely to find that here, because your best bet is to apply for everything and let the employers decide how to handle it.

Kalvno's words: "Stop being fucking lazy" - and who’s being rude?
Yeah, sorry but if a statement like Kalvno’s is your advice then you are going to get some push back from me. I’m cool with everyone on TLS until you start using profanity towards me and calling me lazy.
As I mentioned before I am sending out resumes, several per week, while working full time. And my clerkship is not over until September.
My question was simply whether my resume would be considered if the job description specifically states “must be barred in State X,” when I am awaiting my results from State X? This way I could avoid jobs that have this requirement when applying if I am not being considered.

Your latest response was to a perfectly reasonable, non-rude comment.
My take is that if you're clerking and you can't start the job until September anyway, there's no reason not to apply (because you'll be barred long before you would even start). Of course, you could fail, but that's a whole different can of worms. Also, I'd be surprised if any job cares about you being barred right now as opposed to you being barred before the start date (unless you'd be expected to start right away, which you can't do anyway). Tell them you're awaiting results in state X.
