What can I do to land a Federal Agency attorney position?

I want to work as an attorney for some agency more than any other type of employment. I know to apply via usajobs but I'm not getting any movement. Does anyone have any tips on how they made themselves more appealing to the federal agencies that succeeded? I go to UF/FSU, top 25%.

Are they actually entry-level jobs? I ask just because a lot of the USAjobs positions look for a couple of years of experience, and they will probably have lots of candidates with that experience. What relevant experience do you have - have you worked for any federal agencies? Are you applying to agencies where you have demonstrated experience with their mission? Have you done a federal clerkship? (Not all agencies care about this, but some do.) My impression is that getting hired through USAjobs is pretty tough (though people have done so).

I'm being serious. There's very little you can do other than what you're already doing. Perhaps try to intern for an agency. Your aspirations are pretty broad, i.e. "some agency." GL.

Anyone know of any agencies that post their vacancies on any website beside usajobs?

Are you looking for entry-level or do you have some experience? If entry-level, most federal agencies hire new attorneys through the honors program. You can also apply to the honors program if you are clerking for judge within a couple years of graduating from law school.

If you already graduated and have some experience, then USAJobs provides most of the job openings for federal agencies. The DOJ lists their openings on the DOJ website (http://www.justice.gov/careers/legal/attvacancies.html), but a lot of the postings will link you back to the USAJobs website to apply. I also know that there are attorney positions listed on the USCourts.gov website for those interested in staff attorney gigs, FPD positions, and other attorney positions with the US Courts.

Other than that, just check the main website for the federal agencies you are interested in and see if they have a job listings section on their website. Odds are, they will probably link you back to USAJobs.

Being a JAG in the military helps some. Depending on the service, you can gain enough experience in a few different administrative areas and gain some litigation experience to boot. This will at least get you referred by the HR folks to the final grouping of 15-20 applicants.
