Are you talking about switching your 2L SA's location or switching after you get a job offer?

For switching after you get an offer, it varies firm to firm. It's been done before, but it's typically based on need, availability, what practice group you're in (e.g., if you're doing corporate/securities work and always working with the NYC attorneys, you could express your interest in transferring there, should any availabilities/needs arise), and maybe if you have a really compelling need to change offices, etc. But you'd still just have to ask the firm.

It depends on firm, but also on offices you want to move between. Going from the Pittsburgh office to the DC office isn't as likely as the reverse.

The thread title was loaded with potential. I was hoping you were a first-year dissatisfied with the size of your office. When you insisted on moving to that large corner office vacated by a recently departed partner, hilarity would ensue.

Is it correct to say that your offer is generally tied to the specific office you work at? I am a 1L, but have good although convoluted/boring reasons for asking these questions.

In my experience, the difficulty of a move depends on the destination office's location rather than its size. If you're targeting a move to DC, it will be very tough if you don't have the grades/clerkship. If you're targeting NYC, it would probably be easier.

It also, obviously, depends on the firm.
