I just got an in house gig for oil and gas. It is 10-weeks but they don't hire newly minted law grads. Before finding out about my interview and job, I secured a 1st half summer with a fed district judge. There is no way I can do both jobs.

The fed judge is known for offering her interns clerkships post-graduation. If I impress her it is almost a guarantee she will offer me a clerkship after my summer.

I went to law school specifically for energy transactional law and want to end up in-house after a couple of years in a big firm.

Are you a 1L or 2L? If the in-house gig doesn't hire new law grads, do the fed judge clerkship this summer and try to go back to them next summer or go to a law firm that does energy work for your 2L summer. If you're a 2L do whatever will more likely get you a job.

It depends on what you want to do. If you want to do oil an gas I'd probably reneg.

It also really matters here whether the judge is magistrate, dct, COA, bankruptcy, etc.

Edit, if you want to do biglaw, either will do fine as long as you're a 1L. Presumably the clerkship is less desirable since you're indicating you're not a future litigator.

I might be in the minority here, but I would phone the judge and explain to him that you were offered a position that pays and you really need the money (if you do).

OP here, I am a 1L and the judge is at the district level. I need the money, I'm trying to take out less loans next semester and they pay will really help.

If you're not interested in lit, the clerkship won't help you that much. If you are open or might want to do lit and you really have a good shot at clerking for this judge postgrad, it's a no brainer to spend the summer with the judge.

So, this is all about what you want to do. I suspect you're overselling the likelihood of this job with the judge leading to a clerkship, because that is far from the norm, and if you're interested in oil and gas transactional stuff the paid position makes sense.

There is a 3L working for my judge post-grad, she is an alum, and a professor here clerked for her as well. After talking with the 3L and professor it is a good possibility I will be offered a position if I impress her. Not saying it is easy to do, just that it is a possibility that I don't want to lose out on.

Even though I don't want to do lit, a clerkship can never hurt and it would open up more prestigious firms.

I am trying to work it out where I spend 5 weeks with the judge and 10 with the O&G company.
