Bar exam without background check

I'm already admitted to a state's bar and am employed at a big firm there. However, I'm not positive I'll be staying in that state forever. So I would like to take advantage of having taken the bar exam last July--by transferring my MBE score and simply taking the essay portion of another state's bar exam (where I might want to move in a year or two). This option will expire this coming July (you can only transfer the MBE score for up to a year). The problem is that my current employer doesn't have an office in that state. And so I'm concerned that they might not be excited that I'm even thinking about this other state's bar exam. Does anyone know if I can just take the exam without going through the background check (and having the bar call my current employer)?
