Summer Living Advance From Firm?

I seem to remember reading in an offer letter than this particular firm was going to give out a 4K advance on summer pay to accommodate moving expenses. I can't find this letter anymore and can't remember if it's from the firm I'll be working at.

Is this advance on your summer salary typical of firms? I don't want to call my firm and already be asking for money lol.

Mine and every friends' firm has offered it but they sent us all forms to submit. All NYC firms. I would call recruiting they won't judge you.

Ah-ha. The NY regional distinction makes sense now. Anybody else have an opinion on whether it would seem odd for me to call recruiting about this if I'm not going to NY?

It can't hurt to ask. My firm's (non-NYC) office offers a summer advance, though the firm is headquartered in NYC.

My Detroit firm just gave me a hunk of money for the summer after I graduated law school. Like a $5,000 bonus if I remember correctly, not an advance. I didn't have to ask for or apply for anything. So it's not unheard of. Just ask politely.

My NYC firm offers a $2k advance and I can get it even though I go to school in NYC.
