How possible is this? I've heard the move takes 6 years or so.

You mean Assistant General Counsel, right? I think 3-5 years is the sweet spot. I have been contacted for various positions at Goldman and Carlyle and I have and I am almost 3 years out of LS.

There are other Associate GC/VP positions that take 6-10 years. JR Morgan has a pretty sweet gig they are trying to fill now for a banking counsel level person. I think this is what people do when they realize they wont make partner and want to get out. SC (in particular) is VERY close with Goldman and peers, so if you are doing bank regulatory work then you can at least get an interview.

I wonder how much these "exit options" have been affected by ITE. I've heard of this move being relatively common after 4-5 rotations or so at CSM, but these anecdotes were from the pre-2009 era.

I heard S&C/Cravath are the best at putting people into JPM/Goldman/Morgan Stanley, etc. How many years do you have to stay to become a high-level lawyer (e.g., general counsel, second-in-line) at a smaller PE fund ($50M-1B range)? I heard of S&C/Cravath lawyers do this after 3-4 years in the 1990s and early 2000s, but is that still possible?

Depending on when you make the move, it's initially $200k-$300k all in.
