Starting this thread back up since the most recent announcement just closed. Anyone have any inside info on the positions?

Yeah. I'm especially curious about those who got interviews and whether an inside connection was necessary or if people got interviews blindly from applying.

Right. The reason I asked was because I noticed someone I went to school with advertising the job listing to Facebook friends and saying they can write recommendations. (This person works as an examining attorney now.)

But nobody in the previous postings mentioned any inside connections, so I just wanted to get a feel for who got offers without a connection. I have to imagine that they rank the applicants and that actual trademark experience has to count for something. No?

I applied last year from outside the DC area without Trademark experience, a USPTO internship, or a connection here. I got offered a position, which I accepted, and am now an examining attorney. Keep the faith . . . while your FB friends may have said "I can recommend you if you apply" I can assure you that recommendation means little to nothing. Examining attorneys are kept out of the loop entirely about the hiring process.

Best of luck to you all. Also, if you have any questions about the hiring process or the job itself. Feel free to post them here. I'll be happy to help.

Thanks for the information. Two questions:

1. What was the wait time between applying and hearing back about a referral? And between then and an interview?

2. What was your prior work experience before applying?

Thanks!

1. A great timeline of hiring is laid out here. http://www.glassdoor.com/GD/Interview/U ... Trademarks

2. Graduated in 2013 from lower tier 1 law school as part time student. Top third. Clerkship with Federal district court. Second career.

Were the interviews as intense (I know it said cordial but...) as what the glassdoor review makes them out to be? 3 different panels of interviews huh...what kinds of questions would you say they asked and what do you think they were looking for?

Has anyone heard back about the application apart from being received?

I applied right when the posting opened, and haven't heard anything other than the obvious "received" status update. Starting to feel anxious!

Don't. I'm in the same boat. And I applied a couple years ago with considerably less experience, and it took them even longer to write back with the initial referral.

Had no idea this kind of position existed. Is this a gig you can get right out of law school or do you have to go to a firm first?

I wonder what effect, if any, the OIG report and replacement of Commissioner Cohn will have on the hiring practices this year:

Anyone have news?

The interviews were not too bad. Yes there are many people present, but they are not trying to intimidate or anything of the sort. They are seeking mature enthusiastic self motivated attorneys who will hit the ground running.

Also, each managing attorney and senior attorney makes the hiring decisions for their office. So that means you have 30 people with their own ideas of what makes up a good examining attorney. There's no one thing that everyone is looking for…

I heard from someone connected to the process that this was not an insignificant cut. I know the number of applicants went up from last year's 700, and I doubt they'd want to read through even 500 written responses. Not too excited about waiting a few more weeks to hear anything. Ah federal government

Wow. Really? I heard through someone that they deliberately narrowed the application window in order to reduce the number of applicants. I'm really surprised that that number has gone up with half the time to apply. Any clue how many were actually referred this time around?

Today I received an invitation for first round interview. Anyone else?

The numbers are crazy, but this is a really popular position that only opens up once a year if at all. Also, I got a few notifications about the opening from at least one big listserv I'm on, so I'm sure that increased the numbers. I think it even showed up on LinkedIn. Haven't been able to find out how many made the first cut, but I seem to remember reading somewhere (edit; ha, in this thread) that 300 got offers for a first interview and 100 got offers for the second.

On a positive note, received an email offering me an interview today!
