Goldman Sachs 1L Summer Associate?

I saw another longer thread a while back about Goldman taking 1/2Ls over the summer, but it never really answered my question:

Is this just an interview for summer ibanking or is it legal? I have a 1L interview with them in Chicago (obviously for Chicago office) in a few weeks and there is no description about anything at all (it was just a resume drop through our school's career site). I'm doubting it is legal since I would think anybody working in corporate counsel for them has years of experience?

Thanks for any info you can provide. Sorry for anon, but I'm weird about posting interview/job stuff since it is a pretty sensitive time for 1L with everybody scrambling to find something.

It'll be legal. There is no chance in hell it'll lead to a full time job after graduation

I used to work there, familiar with the HR rep for OTFS and Legal/Compliance and asked this question before I left. Some of the legal departments specific to businesses will have an intern or two (like MBD or IMD legal). Every so often those are law students, a lot of times they're just undergrads. There are also firmwide legal teams, such as employee relations and litigation. The majority of intern postings I've seen come out of GS target at law schools are for PWM and Ibanking associate programs, so not a legal related job.

And yes, they don't hire straight from law schools, only laterals. =/

Edit: If you're interviewing out of the chicago office, I assume it wouldn't be super legal related. Most of the non NYC offices only have a few business lines (usually PWM), and almost all the legal teams are in NYC (I think the entire 15th floor is all legal now). But if I'm wrong, forgive me!

I know two people from my class who did 1L internships with Goldman Sachs in non-legal (some sort of finance work) positions. At least one of them has a full time offer there (no finance experience), and I think the other person just wanted to do legal work and didn't go back.

They came to U of C in the fall to recruit for Summer Associate positions with completely non-legal work. Basically they are recruiting for finance/wealth management positions for their super-wealthy clients. I didn't apply because it didn't seem at all law related. I'm not sure if that is what you're interviewing for, but it sounds like it could be that same finance/wealth management job

Sorry should have clarified. They only hire lawyers from lateral firms. Any normal compliance/pwm/banking job that just requires a bachelors you can get.

... and wait a minute - is Guano really Dingbat? (I don't go to the lounge very much, but is it true they both dropped out of law school or something, assuming they aren't the same person?)
I think it's the same person. Guano means batshit

lol yeah I knew that much, but I was wondering if perhaps he'd outed himself in the lounge or something.

Either way, if the dropped-out-of-law-school portion is true, I guess I just don't understand why someone who gave up on a legal career would be obsessed with... legal careers (and online forums about them).
I've been asking myself this a lot lately.

I've thought of it from so many different angles and I still can't come up with a legal spin that would sound believable. I wonder how "I'm not gonna lie. It paid more than the average public interest job and that's why I took it" would go over in OCI. That has to be the only thing that one could say.
