Question about lateral hiring due to geographic preference

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Jan 07, 2014 9:32 pm

To preface this post, I searched for a big FAQ-type thread about lateral hiring and couldn't find one. I realize my question is probably pretty general. I don't know anything about lateral hiring, so if this is an obvious question, I apologize.

I'm at median at a lower t14. I have an SA at a V50 that generally gives offers to everyone. My SA is in NYC, and my firm doesn't have an office in California.

I want to get back to California ASAP. Assuming I do good work at my firm but am otherwise a fairly average applicant (IE I was only a competitive applicant, roughly, in the V50-V100 range), will I have a strong shot at biglaw back in CA? How would I know which firms I would be competitive at? I was born and raised there, did UG there, family is there, etc.

I don't care about vault prestige and am looking to make this move solely based on geographic preference. However, I would like to stay within biglaw because of my incredible amount of debt.

Thanks in advance.
