Lateraling from government to Big Law

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about the prospect of lateraling from fed government to big law partner or a Fortune 500 in-house gig? Is it difficult to do? I know several people who were chiefs of divisions or departments (like head of a well-known USAO's civil division) and then moved over to big law partner. How hard is that? Do most people make the move for financial reasons (gotta pay the mortgage, college tuition, etc.)?

Depends on the government position you're lateralling from. In general, it may be easier to make biglaw partner outright than get the type of supervisory government position which would make it easy to lateral as a biglaw partner.
On the other hand, the government experience raises partners' profiles so they may be more highly compensated when they do decide to enter private practice. Just depends.

If you are high enough in the Fed Gov at certain agencies (DOJ Fraud Section/SEC/Financial Reg) firms, especially those in DC and NY will gun for you.
