Hey everyone. A while back I read an article on the web that said there will be more open/available full time legal jobs than law graduates around the time a lot of us graduate (2017 I think). Is this true? Is this good news? Has anyone read this article, or heard something similar? Just want to hear (or better yet read) your thoughts. Thanks

That would be wonderful news! Seems legit, but who knows. Can anyone else validate this? I know currently the market is the opposite but with enrollment the lowest in decades, who knows?

It's good news that entry level employment has remained at least steady

But, all those predictions don't take into account the excess labor supply from previous graduating classes. Those people don't just disappear from the legal labor market.

What has consistently angered me about this focus on the drop in applications making this a great time to apply, is that no one ever examines why applications are dropping. No one focuses on the fact that law school admissions were artificially inflated based on false employment data.

Applications are dropping because the reality of legal hiring was misrepresented by schools for decades. Now the truth is being made clear by LST and the pressure they have applied to schools, people understand that for most applicants law is a hugely expensive gamble.

I don't understand how this could possibly be a better time for most applicants when the cost is absurd and the jobs are so limited. Maybe for someone who can get a T6 or a great scholarship when they wouldn't otherwise it is a good thing- but this is probably a tiny percentage of total applicants.

If you want to read about the future of legal employment read the inside the law school scam posts on the bls (bureau of labor standards) numbers. Those numbers are about 20,000 new jobs a year - and that includes temporary and part-time jobs. Those numbers also may overestimate the number of lawyers who are going to retire.

But, all those predictions don't take into account the excess labor supply from previous graduating classes. Those people don't just disappear from the legal labor market.

They're not meant to. The prediction is that "there will be more full time legal jobs than law graduates." It's not making a prediction about previous graduating classes.

The problem is that by conflating number of jobs with number of grads is that it sounds like there will be a job for most, if not all grads. But anyone with half a brain knows that is not the case and is simply misleading.

Also this ignores the fact that most legal jobs blow small cock. Getting a job isn't a success.

Maybe, but the vast majority of law jobs are shittier than the person could have gotten without a law degree, without wasting three years, and without debt.
