Does anyone know the reason for this downsizing of space (other than saving $)?

I believe they kept their current place (as opposed to upgrading) in 2008 in order to avoid massive layoffs. So even if one were going to assume the worst (i.e. that the firm is in financial trouble), at least they're not firing associates? Couple this with the significant downsizing of support staff.....

Just kidding, they're probably fine. Maybe. Probably.

Honestly, it may be just because they need less space. May firms are getting rid of/slimming physical libraries and using less secretaries. Both of these things take like 35% of the entire office space (from my experience last summer).

Also, FiDi office space is a lot cheaper than midtown.

Perhaps it's something simple like they're realizing they don't need a library or something due to technology.

It wouldn't be fun if we didn't.

The firm is fine. I was there this past summer. The building is pretty outdated, and most people were excited about the move. Right now the firm gives summers and first years their own offices from the start, and even then there were a number of vacant offices. Given the beautiful DC office, it was only a matter of time before NYC updated.
