Is there any type of work that a 1L potentially interested in capital markets could pursue? Thanks.

Sure. One friend who now works capital markets at a NYC v5 worked in-house for a hedge fund his 1L summer, and I know FINRA usually has opportunities available.

It's not that big a deal, though; I know plenty of people who get into capital markets no problem after doing standard 1L summer gigs like judicial internships. Just get good grades and hustle.

I felt as if firms tend to push associates into capital markets so I think you do not need something capital-market specific. Most law students tend to be litigation oriented, and if not that, they say M&A.

Did he have prior WE related to hedge funds?

No. He was straight through from undergrad (although he had double-majored in PoliSci and Econ with a Math minor, which obviously made him more attractive to hedge funds)—got that job primarily through personal connections, as I'm aware, but I saw a few advertising on my school's Symplicity and through Indeed when I was looking for 1L positions.
