3L here. had several clerkship interviews this fall and had professors call chambers to go to bat for my candidacy.

has anyone heard of professors calling firms to support a job candidate? let's assume the professor did not work for the firm in the past, but has a specialty in a subject that is very relevant to the practice area the candidate is applying to.

Never have I heard of this. It would make more sense if the professor was a partner at firm and adjunct at school...

There was a time where the former dean of stanford law apparently called firms until he found a spot for everybody in his 2L class that wanted one.

I guess OP loses nothing, but on the other hand, what the dean was doing is also very different from a professor calling. Professors (most of them at least) are academic types without many connections to firms. Deans by their nature are more businessy or commercial (for lack of better word), and as such it makes more sense with them. They might have strong firm connections and can offer firms a relationship, whatever that entails.
