When you consider that Yale has funding for their grads to pretty much do their own Skadden after graduation, it's especially angering. I never applied but I always found the Skadden application and acceptance process kind of anti-public interest in what it chooses to prioritize.

Do folks know how the EJW apps are graded?

I'm not sure how they are graded, but I do know that former EJW fellows help with the initial screening.

They're graded by former fellows with letter grades. The 3 sections (applicant, host agency, and project) are graded separately then the grades are averaged and there's a particular average that is needed to make it on to the funders. For a high enough grade: applicant must be committed to public interest and capable of carrying out project, host agency must meet criteria and be reputable and able to provide supervision, & the project must not be a regular staff attorney position at agency and must be doable.

Edit: Also graded by multiple former fellows, and if there's a stand out bad grade that brings down the average, it will be reviewed again by EJW.

Anyone heard of people getting rejected by EJW yet? Or is it right that everyone got a "still in the running" email?

I waited all day and all evening on Friday to get a phone call because, for some reason, I was under the impression that all finalists would get a phone call, regardless of the outcome. I got nothing. I hope that they have the courtesy to write.

And amen to the person who pointed out the lack of diversity. If they were just going to pick a bunch of people from Yale, I wish that they would have just rejected me sooner.

Anyone still interviewing for EJW or have things gone quiet?

I guess I don't understand why the process takes so long.

Same question. I'd hope after all the work they'd do more for a rejection than a letter via snail mail.

As much as Skadden's lack of diversity makes me angry, at least you can have a good idea if you are accepted or rejected in a reasonable time frame. This EJW stuff is crazy. I dont' have any idea if I am still in the running or what.

So has anyone heard anything from EJW since the "you're still in the running" update in early December? Anyone else totally in the dark?

Still totally in the dark here. My sponsoring org said they were told that my application was graded highly by EJW's internal review system, but if my experience is any indication, that may have no effect at all on whether you actually get interviews/get a fellowship since ultimately the individual sponsoring orgs decide who they want to interview. I've also heard that the EJW process can extend through April, so unless you got a call or letter saying you were certainly rejected (has anyone?), you may be in limbo for a loooonnnnnggggg time.

Sorry. Meant EJW. I think Skadden does letters.

I think I was unclear again. The rejection after the individual interview is by phone for EJW.

I don't know how they eliminate people from the running in the program as a whole (or if they do).

For me: A few days. I think the interview was Tuesday and the rejection was Thursday or Friday.

I know someone else though where it took a couple of weeks.

EJW sent an email out at the end of January saying they would send out proposal status updates by the end of this month. Who knows what that means but I wouldn't call it just yet.

I'm also "still in the running" for EJW.

Anyone know how EJW salaries are taxed?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
