I have a callback interview where I am scheduled to be picked up by the firm's personal cab driver from the airport to the firm, and then afterwards to my hotel. Do I tip the driver? Firm is paying for expenses.

Personal cab driver? You mean a car service?

If black car service, don't tip and just sign where the driver tells you to. If it's a yellow cab or similar, where you are expected to pay the fare and then get reimbursed, then tip and get the fare + tip reimbursed.

I was wondering the same thing...but one of the attorneys at the [big] firm I worked at in NY had his own driver. I could see a small boutique firm having its own driver.

Some car services allow the non-passenger payor to include tip, some don't, and others still have the passenger fill out a slip at the end (to verify when and where pick-up and drop-off were made) where they can add tip.

I would either ask your contact in attorney recruiting or just offer a cash tip and see if s/he refuses.

I've never tipped the car service. I always tip the cab driver. If I wanted to deal with reimbursements I would just take a cab as it's usually faster to hail one than to wait for a black car.

OP here- pretty sure it's a guy who is a personal driver for the firm. Not sure how much to tip?

Again, if he's the personal driver for the firm I sincerely doubt that there is any expectation that you will tip. The firm should be taking care of that. Just think about how ridiculous it would be if the firm was paying the driver but then left it up to you to tip who would then turn to the firm for reimbursement on the tip. It's just unnecessarily complicated.

It's always safe to tip, and then ask for reimbursement.

Black car home does not require tips, cabs of course do.

If in doubt, give the guy $10 and just eat the cost if you feel weird asking for reimbursement.

Why not just ask the driver? I get that it might be a little weird but honestly, what's the blowback? There is a zero percent chance asking swings an offer from a yes to a no (or vice versa). So when you get in, strike up a conversation and then ask him how often he does this drive and what are other interviewees like and ask him whether it's normal to tip or not. I don't mean to be blunt, but I honestly don't understand how someone hasn't suggested this yet. People are pretty normal in general. They'll understand a normal question. This is a normal question. So ask it, get an answer, and worry about something more important in life.
