Practice Group or Firm Name?

So let's say firm x is in Band 1 for a chambers practice area that I am strongly leaning towards, yet firm y has a much better general ranking, but not in this practice area. Seeing as 59% of lawyers that made partner this past year started their careers elsewhere, are the opportunities to lateral more likely for a higher ranked practice area, or from a higher ranked overall firm?

If you're in the practice group, the practice group. If you're not, it depends.

It also depends on how you want to "exit." If you're planning a career in the field, practice group rep is the end-all, be-all. If you want to jump to become a prof, firm name may matter more because it's just a braggy line item. If you want to move to a government gig, you might look into how those connections exist.

It's impossible to say in general terms, basically. It's also often splitting hairs.

How can you be sure that you will work in a specific practice group in the long term?

are you asking how one can reliably predict the future?
